On September 28 and 29, four students from West Island Career Centre (WICC) attended the NAPA Autopro Bursary Gala in Ottawa. The four students honoured at the event were Sarah Lane (who had the best video in the province), Mathias Balk-Forcione, Mervin Toussaint and Melissa Lalonde.
NAPA Autopro sponsored the all-expenses paid event for Auto Mechanic students who, through a province-wide competition, had been selected to receive a bursary. Students submitted a video to apply for the bursary. Winners were selected based on the following criteria: attendance, punctuality, performance and work ethic. Over 400 guests from various automotive organizations attended the gala, where each winner received his/her $1,000 bursary and an honorary certificate.
The fun-filled weekend included an outing to the beautiful Museum of Canadian Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec. This outing offered a unique experience for students to combine culture, meet possible future employers, and develop strong connections in the industry. Many students did in fact receive some offers of employment throughout the weekend. On Saturday, they participated in workshops and visited supplier expositions that represented all regions of Quebec. Students were also honoured at a formal reception dinner.
The students enjoyed the weekend’s activities and felt welcomed by all. Many came back with industry contacts and possible jobs offers. They also have some great plans for how they intend to use their bursary. They feel that they have received a significant boost in their field and life. It will help provide them with tools, toolboxes and even much-needed maintenance for their vehicles in dire need of parts and repair. Winning the bursary was not only a great experience but also a way to plan for the future.
Congratulations Sarah, Mathias, Mervin and Melissa.
